Character economics
Character economics is the analysis of TTS cost-per-character across different monthly volumes — the buyer’s real question once they move beyond trial tier.
Why vendors hide this
Marketing pages quote monthly subscriptions ($22/mo Creator, $19/mo Basic). Nobody shows the cost-per-million-characters table at scale. That’s because at high volume, the economics flip dramatically.
The maths at 5M chars/month
| Vendor | Cost at 5M chars/mo | Per 1M chars |
|---|---|---|
| Inworld TTS-1.5 Max | ~$90/mo | ~$18 |
| Amazon Polly Neural | $80/mo | $16 |
| Google Cloud TTS Studio | $150/mo | $30 |
| Azure Speech Neural | $80/mo | $16 |
| ElevenLabs (Scale tier) | ~$1,500/mo | ~$300 |
| Murf Business (extrapolated) | ~$600/mo | ~$120 |
| Play.ht Pro | $500/mo | ~$100 |
The ElevenLabs number isn’t an error. At 5M chars/month on the Scale tier, you’d need multiple Scale seats or Enterprise pricing. The realistic landed cost is $1,200–$1,500/mo. Inworld TTS-1.5 Max at the same volume: approximately $90.
That’s roughly a 16x cost delta for comparable MOS (Inworld scores 4.5 vs ElevenLabs 4.6 in our panel). The 0.1 MOS difference is not worth 16x the spend for any rational buyer at that volume.
Where ElevenLabs wins on character economics
At low volume — under 100K chars/mo — ElevenLabs Creator ($22/mo) is competitive with everything except free tiers. The character economics argument only applies once you’re processing serious volume.
The crossover point where Inworld becomes cheaper than ElevenLabs: approximately 500K chars/month (Pro tier comparison). Below that, ElevenLabs Pro at $99/mo is within range of API alternatives.
Conversion: characters to minutes of audio
Rough benchmarks for scoping:
- 1,000 characters ≈ 1.5–2 minutes of audio at normal speaking pace (150 words/min, ~5 chars/word)
- A 10-minute YouTube voiceover script ≈ 7,000–8,000 characters
- A full audiobook chapter (3,000 words) ≈ 15,000 characters
- An IVR system handling 1,000 calls/day at 30s average ≈ 150,000 chars/day = 4.5M chars/mo
